April Artisan: Keawpankanlaya Kanlayanamit from Thailand

Born in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai in Thailand, Keawpankanlaya Kanlayanamit has a passion for the textile art of silk brocade. After years of watching the village women weaving gorgeous patterns and designs on looms, she decided to continue the silk brocade legacy.

Her mother encouraged her to pursue art, and together they would create long skirts, dresses, hair bands, and other traditional garments made from Thai silk brocade. Keawpankanlaya studied textile design and photography at the Chiang Mai University, then set up a photo store shortly after graduating.

However, her photo store was nearly completely destroyed in a fire and, around that same time, her mother became ill and was hospitalized for a month. Keawpankanlaya became very depressed but decided she had to take matters into her own hands. Her unwavering hope and love for Thai silk brocade led her to her work with Novica.

Today, Keawpankanlaya continues her silk brocade creations and also enjoys photographing people wearing beautiful Thai silk. Keawpankanlaya is a living example of hope, strength, and true beauty from the inside and out. Her beautiful silk accessories, such as the handbag below, are sold at Novica.com.
